The Fragility of Nature

Experiencing for the second time how fragility and resilience are so interrelated and many times interwind, made me reflect on how fragility in art explores the delicate, temporary, or vulnerable aspects of subjects and the artistic process, often contrasting with traditional permanence to comment on human vulnerability and the fleeting nature of life and experience. These concepts to me are always connected, so as to be difficult to separate.

In this body of work, inspired by the old Dutch tradition of Vanitas, I used subjects like flowers, leaves, thorns, and insects as themes of impermanence and emotional vulnerability to challenge viewers' perceptions of beauty in decay, and reflect on how we humans look at these concepts. These works explore emotional vulnerability, the impermanence of life, the resilience of not giving up by creating rebirth, and the need for intimacy. All works are untitled, so they can have their own place in the viewer’s mind intimately and uniquely.
