Offerings: The Art of Giving
Throughout human history, offerings have served as essential conduits between individuals, communities, and the spiritual forces they seek to honor. Rooted in ritual and belief, the act of giving has long been intertwined with love, suffering, and the collective need to forge meaning beyond the self. Even as distinct individuals, humans have always lived within communities—crafting culture, shaping shared values, and developing practices that affirm connection. As makers, we give instinctively: each act of creation becomes an offering, whether born of intention or emerging unconsciously from the impulse to share. To create is to give.
Across cultures, artists and poets have transformed the offering into a sustained cultural conversation, exploring how devotion, gratitude, and pain manifest through material form. By acknowledging the complexities of historical rituals of giving, contemporary makers can add their own voices to this lineage—extending the spiritual resonance of offerings into the present. Art becomes a force that unsettles and awakens, stirring devotion, passion, discomfort, and vulnerability. It invites viewers into a space where emotional truth is both revealed and received.
The Art of Giving is a series of installations grounded in printmaking traditions—Collagraph, Etching, Linocut, and Silkscreen—each inspired by poetic works that examine the intertwined experiences of devotion, gratitude, and suffering. Through repetition, materiality, and symbolic gesture, the series explores how offerings continue to shape human connection and spiritual expression.
NESTING A PLACE THROUGH LAYERS is an installation of twelve Collagraph‑Intaglio prints (6 × 6 inches each) on archival paper, inspired by E.E. Cummings’s poem Love is a Place. Framed at 8 × 10 inches and accompanied by three wooden vessels painted white, the work evokes the purity and vulnerability inherent in acts of giving. The vessels—symbols of receptivity and life—extend the prints’ meditations on intimacy, offering, and the layered spaces where love resides.
Together, the prints and vessels construct a quiet, devotional environment. Through the interplay of texture, repetition, and symbolic form, the installation reflects on how love becomes a place we build, inhabit, and offer—layer by layer—through the art of giving.
